Just outside of Amacuzac and approximately 30 minutes from Cuernavaca, Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas is a stunning historic hacienda constructed in 1529 that has been artfully refurbished into a deluxe hotel. Built along the 'camino real' trade route and constructed by order of Cortez, the history embodied in this property is remarkable. During the 1600s, this hacienda and working sugar mill was the largest in the Americas and stretched over 32,000 hectares from the state of Morelos to the state of Oaxaca. After several changes in ownership and reduced in size after the Mexican revolution, the property was purchased in the 1970s by the current owning family and became a 20-room hotel. With impressive grounds that include lush gardens, palm trees, an outdoor swimming pool, horse stables, paddle court, a soothing spa and temazcal (sweat-bath) activities onsite can keep guests occupied for days. All this considered, one of the best things to do is soak in the scenery viewing the lush gardens at one of the many outdoor terraces or the Hacienda's spa. Located in a separate garden area with ancient trees and the sounds of a nearby waterfall, the indoor/outdoor space allows guests to instantly feel at peace in nature, the spa offers a variety of treatments, all using organic natural remedies made in-house, specially designed for the integration of harmony between mind, body and spirit.
